Evel Pie had a pretty cool and unique vibe as far as pizza places go. As you walk in you are greeted with rock music, walls covered in Evel Knievel memorabilia, and a lack of light from the exterior windows covered in stickers. They have a full bar and a standard New York style pizza counter with all of their pizza by the slice on display. We ordered four slices, their Extreme Pepperoni, Balls to the wall, Sweet Heat, and Barry White. All of them by the slice, they averaged around $6.50 each and only took a few minutes to come out of the oven.

Crust

Overall the crust had a nice flavor that seemed to compliment the rest of their ingredients. Between the slices the crust was pretty inconsistent with some having crispy bottoms, some were not crisp at all, and one came out crispy and quickly devolved into a limp triangle requiring a support hand to eat. It really felt like a toss up depending on the weight and moisture content of the toppings. Despite the flavor, the crust was still pretty dry and felt like a chore to eat.

Sauce

What sauce? I hate to say it but the two “traditional” slices we ordered (Extreme Pepperoni and Sweet Heat) I was actively looking for the sauce. It just blended into the pizza, nowhere to be found. Maybe this is intentional but It left a lot to be desired in terms of flavor. The crust and the cheese just met with the faintest amount of sauce between them and felt as though something was missing.

Cheese

The standard pizza cheese was great, it broke just like you expect it to on a New York slice and had just the right amount of grease to make it all seem intentional. The ricotta cheese on the other slices tasted good, a little on the bland side, as to be expected with ricotta. When it mixed with the rest of the pizza it felt especially bland and not very cohesive with the dry crust.

Toppings

The toppings were really good across the board, not overpowering or underwhelming. The flavors of all the individual toppings were good on what we ordered. There was basil on 3 of the 4 slices, it gave a nice color but it wasn’t particularly noticeable on any of them, especially the pepperoni. The ingredient selection was also very good and nothing felt out of place or longing for something to be added.

Overall

We had some great pizza, if I had to do it again I would probably stick to the cheese and pepperoni slices. They really just felt right in terms of overall flavor profile, The white/ricotta pizzas just didn’t have enough grease or oil to counteract how dry the crust was. This really made me feel like I was just trying to get the pizza over with after a few bites.

The Leftovers

The atmosphere was great and fit the theme well but felt dirty overall, there was a lot of traffic in and out of the door due to the location. The building is small which makes it hard not to be sitting right next to the door. I have heard a lot about Evel Pie and I thought the place was cool but the pizza is overrated and quite expensive for what you get. I do recommend checking it out and grabbing a slice if you are in the area but I won’t be frequenting the place.
